The Star Island pier is an imposing, natural stone structure capped with concrete. Its surface, getting washed with the sea during a gale and high tide, lets the water freeze into interesting patterns. You can’t see it well in this scan, but the rails are covered with hanging ice all bent eastward, following the wind’s direction. These fingers of frozen spray are long and wavy and will age rapidly and fall to slush in this ever-changing marine environment. |
